Toronto FC Shows Positive Signs but Falls in Season Opener Against FC Dallas

FRISCO, Texas — Toronto FC opened its 2026 Major League Soccer campaign with encouraging moments but left Texas empty-handed after a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium.

Despite twice finding the equalizer, Toronto was undone by a late goal from Petar Musa, who scored twice and proved decisive in the season opener for both clubs. Logan Farrington added a goal and an assist for Dallas, while Toronto’s goals came from Djordje Mihailovic and Derrick Etienne Jr..

Toronto showed personality and resilience, responding on both occasions after conceding, but ultimately struggled to contain Dallas’ attacking efficiency in the final third.

Dallas struck early. Musa opened the scoring in the ninth minute, capitalizing on space inside the box to give the home side an early advantage. Toronto responded quickly and with quality. In the 15th minute, Mihailovic finished calmly after collecting a perfectly weighted through ball from Jonathan Osorio, leveling the match at 1-1.

The home side regained the lead just before halftime. Farrington created separation from two defenders with a sharp cutback and placed his shot inside the right post from the center of the area in the 38th minute, sending Dallas into the break up 2-1.

Toronto continued to push in the second half and was rewarded in the 67th minute. Etienne Jr. reacted first to a rebound following a shot from Dániel Sallói, finishing from close range to make it 2-2 and keep Toronto firmly in the contest.

However, Dallas delivered the decisive blow in the 79th minute. Farrington swung in a precise cross from the flank, and Musa rose in the center of the box to flick a header inside the left post, sealing the result.

In goal, Michael Collodi recorded five saves for Dallas. Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran was not credited with a save, as Dallas made the most of its clear chances.

Beyond the scoreline, the match offered positive indicators for Toronto FC. The team showed attacking fluidity, composure in possession, and the ability to respond under pressure, though defensive adjustments will be needed as the season progresses.
