Toronto FC signs Ythallo on a permanent deal to strengthen its defense
After a year on loan, Toronto FC has decided to bet on Brazilian defender Ythallo, finalizing his permanent transfer from São Paulo. The 20-year-old center-back, who played the 2024 season with TFC II, has already officially bid farewell to the Brazilian club and is ready to take the next step in his career.

A deal that seemed unlikely
When Ythallo arrived in Toronto a year ago, the club had high expectations for his development. However, he failed to break into the first team and spent the entire season in MLS Next Pro, where he became a key player for TFC II. He played 25 matches, starting 22 of them, and left a strong impression in Gianni Cimini’s defense.
Despite having a purchase option, Toronto FC initially chose not to activate it at the end of the season. However, in a surprising turn of events, the club has reconsidered and has now secured his permanent signing.
The defensive landscape has changed significantly since the end of the 2024 season. Shane O’Neill and Aimé Mabika, who made a combined 41 appearances last year, were both released. O’Neill has already found a new destination in Serbia with Radnički 1923.
Currently, Toronto’s center-back options include Kevin Long, Sigurd Rosted, Henry Wingo, and Nicksoen Gomis, though the latter has been sidelined for the entire preseason due to injury. Additionally, young defenders Adam Pearlman and Lazar Stefanović could receive opportunities with the first team.
The big question now is whether Ythallo will finally get his chance with the first team or continue his development with TFC II. With the need to strengthen the defense and a lack of depth in the squad, the Brazilian could earn a spot under John Herdman.
Will Ythallo establish himself at Toronto FC? Time will tell, but the club has decided he is worth the investment.
