France knocks out Argentina in tense Olympic clash in Bordeaux to advance to semifinals
The French national team, led by Thierry Henry, has secured its place in the semifinals of the men's football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by defeating Argentina 1-0. The lone goal of the match came in the fifth minute, courtesy of a header from Jean-Philippe Mateta after a cross from Michael Olise, now playing for Bayern Munich.

The Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux, a stadium eager for quality football following the recent financial woes of Girondins that relegated them to the French Fifth Division, erupted with joy at France's early goal. However, the match was far from easy for the hosts. Mateta had a chance to extend the lead, but Argentina regrouped and created several clear opportunities, albeit unsuccessfully.
Julián Álvarez and Giuliano Simeone failed to convert their chances, and Boca Juniors' young talent Ezequiel Fernández forced a spectacular save from French goalkeeper Restes with a powerful shot from outside the box. Despite numerous opportunities, Argentina couldn't find the back of the net.
In the second half, France adopted a defensive stance, allowing Argentina to press in search of an equalizer. However, precision was not on the side of the Albiceleste, and although Mateta had another chance to seal the match, he couldn't capitalize. The VAR disallowed a second French goal scored by Olise, intensifying the tension in the stadium.
Argentine frustration boiled over into an altercation after the final whistle. Enzo Millot received a red card and will miss the semifinal, a blow for France. This incident cast a shadow over a day that should have been remembered for the thrilling football on display.
In the semifinals, France will face Egypt in Lyon, while Morocco and Spain will clash in Marseille, with both matches scheduled for next Monday. The grand final will be held in Paris on August 9.
